January in Coastal Cottages HQ is always a busy month, with everyone trying to get rid of those January blues by booking there summer holidays! All the girls in the office however are counting down the days to St Dwynwen's Day on Wednesday 25th January, also known as the Welsh valentines day.
In the hope that our welsh men take the hint, we've put together a list of the top 5 romantic cottages that we would love to be whisked away to for a relaxing, romantic short break.

Christmas Countdown......

The countdown is on for Christmas with only 19 days to go, the office tree is up and the secret santa presents are appearing. Ruby is having a great time shaking everyone's presents and trying to work out who has who!! Along with the festivities in the office there are plenty of things going on around Pembrokeshire to keep every little Christmas elf happy. Sue and Rona have been down to the Christmas market in Saundersfoot, set along the seafront it was a seasonal showcase of food, drinks and Christmas gifts and of course the man himself Father Christmas!!!

If you are still needing that bit of encouragement to get into the Christmas spirit Scolton Manor country park are holding a carol service on the 14th and 15th December at 7.30pm. Located around the impressive tree in the manor house, there will be mince pies and mulled wine for all, along with a good sing song its sure to be very popular so booking is recommended.

If you have some excited little ones at home how about venturing to the Torch Theatre in Milford Haven for there annual Christmas Panto- The Christmas Cuckoo's Cooking is running from the 22nd December through to the 31st December. It's party time at Coastal Cottages!

We are all very excited here in Coastal Cottages HQ, this Friday it's Children in Need and we are holding a Pj Party to help raise money for such a wonderful Charity. We will all be arriving for work dressed head to toe in our Pjs ready for a day of fun activities including a quiz, a "pudsey bake sale" and a Children's Tea Party with loads of yummy treats! For every booking made on Friday 18th November Coastal Cottages of Pembrokeshire will be donating £1 to Children in Need, so you can help us raise as much money as possible! I can't believe it's only 6 weeks now till Christmas, if your like me and all the Christmas shopping is done you can sit back relax and enjoy many of the festivities around Pembrokeshire at this time of year. Piction Castle are hosting there annual Christmas Market on the 26th and 27th November where the castle and it's grounds are transformed into a winter wonderland with many stalls to buy hand crafted Christmas presents or decorations. St Davids are holding there Christmas market on the 10th December where children can meet Father Christmas and Mum and Dad's can stay warm with Mulled wine whilst listening to Carols.

Autumn Colours

Autumn has definitely arrived here in Pembrokeshire, and it's a wonderful time to come and explore the county with loads going on. If your like Annie and like nothing better than wrapping up warm and going out to explore the amazing autumnal colours on the trees, Canaston woods is the place to be with walks through mixed woodland, it is definitely worth a visit.

If your more interested in sampling the produce that Pembrokeshire has to offer, Fishguard and Goodwick are holding a Autumn food festival and this will run from the 27th October to the 29th October, where there are cookery workshops, food trails and live bands to enjoy. There are also activities and competitions to keep your little ones busy during the few days.

Autumn also brings with it Halloween, it's a great excuse to dress up as our favourite spooky character's, and the best way to celebrate this would be a night tour of Carew Castle. On Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th October be prepared to be very scared as Carew Castle opens its doors for a Halloween night tour, where a ghost tour of the castle will be taking place! There is plenty to do and see at this wonderful time of year, so come and join us here in Pembrokeshire.

Hollywood Hits Pembrokeshire

We are all excited here in the office that Pembrokeshire once again plays host to Hollywood, Marloes Sands is the new backdrop for Snow White and the Huntsman staring Kristen Stewart and what a wonderful setting- with it's long isolated sands and rocky outcrops. It is a popular beach with many locals choosing to visit here for it's amazing scenery.

It's not the first time our coastline has been in the spotlight when Ridley Scott's Robin Hood came to Freshwater West back in 2009, Russel Crowe was spotted out in some local pubs, so here in the office Amy is organising a trip celeb spotting!!

If your like Jan and celebrities aren't your thing, from the 30th September Secret Light Gardens in Picton Castle is a weekend of unusual night time scenery- where an illuminated walk through the castle gardens brings many surprises. There is plenty to do and see in Pembrokeshire at this time of year, and deals to be had so it's well worth a visit.

Get hooked by Pembrokeshire Fish Week!

Fish Week is back - bigger and better than ever! Making a splash from next Saturday, 25th June to 3rd July, the week is packed with more events than ever before.

Great for all gourmets out there - there are cookery demonstrations and mouth watering menus in local pubs and restaurants, fish suppers and barbecues. But the week is not just for seafood lovers. There are also many events and activities - from the carnival atmosphere at the opening day on Milford Haven marina to boat trips, seaside barbecues and sandcastle competitions. The whole county is taking part and there are events going on all over. If a sea monster workshop isn't quite your thing then what about coasteering or kayaking followed by cooking what you catch on the beach? Local galleries and heritage centres are running events plus there are live music nights, craft activities, wine tastings and guided walks. The week is a perfect opportunity to see another side of Pembrokeshire and find out more about our long fishing heritage as well as raising awareness of our wonderful coastline. Here in the office we've been discussing the highlights we're most looking forward to - Annie is hoping to try fish tapas and catching then cooking her own fish. Val and Sue are looking forward to the opening day and Jan is keen on a cruise around Cardigan Island followed by fish and chips. Ruby is itching to get out in a kayak whereas Amy is more keen on sampling some sushi. I rather fancy having a go in a coracle.

It's a fintastic week to be here in Pembrokeshire - so come along and make a splash!

Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May...

It's been a just little bit gusty here lately which has been great news for Annie, who loves her windsurfing and has been out making the most of it as often as possible. She comes in to the office looking very exhilarated!

The forecast for the coming week is lovely - perfect for the bank holiday and half term. There are all sorts of events on around the county and there is something for everyone. The renowned St. Davids Cathedral Festival is on until 5th June. Now in its 33rd year, it is one of Wales' greatest classical music festivals and has a diverse range of concerts. The Welsh Wildlife Centre near Cardigan also has a variety of events on over the coming week - from their Spring open day and pond dipping to meeting owls and learning about moths. There are coastal path walks hosted by the National Park Authority and on 30th May Castell Henllys near Newport is celebrating the Celtic feast of Beltaine (the feast of fire.) There is a twilight family nature watch on at Colby Woodland Gardens near Amroth on 31st May - a beautiful setting to observe woodland wildlife.

Next weekend we've got the Long Course Weekend to look forward to - it will be a great spectator event even if you're not taking part. Pembrokeshire Fish Week is also coming up at the end of the month. From classical music to windsurfing, barn owls to marathons, it's a busy and exciting time here so come and join in!

Treasure Islands...

For anyone who missed Countryfile on BBC1 last night, it's well worth trying to catch it - as the programme featured Skomer Island, one of Pembrokeshire's treasures.

May is a perfect time to visit Skomer. The island is carpeted in bluebells and pink campions, and many migratory birds have returned to breed. Puffins are busy breeding - see them bringing beak fulls of sand eels back to their chicks safely ensconced in clifftop burrows. Kittiwakes, Guillemots, Razorbills and many other birds are breeding now too - the noise from their colonies is quite incredible! The nature reserve is home to a diverse range of species - from thousands of birds to marine wildlife. Skomer and her sister island Skokholm also have the largest known concentration of the fascinating and elusive Manx Shearwaters in the world. As well as the bird life, the island has spectacular scenery and fascinating heritage - from Iron Age settlements to farming until the 1950's.

Skomer and Skokholm are one of only three marine nature reserves in the UK - just another of Pembrokeshire's many treasures that are well worth exploring Visiting is a wonderful and memorable experience.

Celebrate the Royal wedding!

The weather is fab here in Pembrokeshire and we're enjoying a mini-heatwave! Long may it continue. We're all of course also looking forward to THE wedding next Friday, 29th April.

There are lots of events on all over Pembrokeshire to celebrate the royal wedding day - the highlight of which is an event held in magnificent Pembroke Castle. Doors open from 9am and the wedding itself will be shown live on an outdoor screen at 11am. It's a perfect regal setting - explore the castle itself, picnic on the lawn with pimms and champagne and there will also be live music, activities and even a prince and princess fancy dress competition. Easter in Pembrokeshire!

Plans are afoot for Easter here in Coastal Cottages HQ and we're all enjoying the fab spring weather. Easter is drawing ever nearer and it's the perfect time to hop on down to Pembrokeshire.

Our favourite things to do here in Pembrokeshire at this time of year include; romantic walks on the beach at Broad Haven (Sarah), woodland walks, daffodils "fluttering and dancing in the breeze," windsurfing at Tenby (Annie), seeing tiny lambs on the Preseli mountains, Easter egg hunts (Ruby can't wait for the ones at Scolton Manor and Picton Castle near Haverfordwest.) Sue enjoys photographing the gorgeous spring scenery and Amy makes the most of the warm, light evenings with a few drinks overlooking the beach at Wisemans Bridge. For Leanne it's the cricket season starting and taking her nephew to Folly Farm and Sadie can't wait to get to the beach with a BBQ!

There are lots of events on all over the county over the Easter holidays. This Saturday there is a family walk and teddy bears picnic at Blackpool Mill and through Canaston Woods. For something quite different, Castell Henllys Iron Age fort near Newport is hosting a fighting and farming children's event on 18th April - learn how to build a roundhouse and train to be a warrior. They are also hosting a "Witches, Wolves and the Wickerman" walk with story on 20th April and an evening of moths and bats evening event on 21st . The award winning farmers market in Haverfordwest has a special Easter market on 22nd April and there is also an Easter trail at Stackpole on 26th April.

There's something here for everyone plus Tenby was recently voted the best beach in Wales, so what better time to visit than now!

An amazing Crufts 2011!

I really enjoyed the four day show at DFS Crufts this year; we met an abundance of lovely people and their dogs that had genuine interest in holidaying with their dog to our beautiful, dog friendly Pembrokeshire County.

We are delighted that from the thousand people that entered our competition to win a FREE dog friendly holiday to Pembrokeshire, yesterday we drew our lucky winner and the dog friendly holiday to a popular self catering property sleeping up to 6 people and welcoming two dogs has been given away to a very happy family!

I hope that you all have had a nose at our latest Woof Guide creation, 'Dog Walks of Pembrokeshire' guide, that in their hundreds were also given away at the Crufts show, which is a fabulous guide of wondrous walks and beauty spots that are not to be missed during your dog friendly visit to Pembrokeshire.

Once having witnessed the array of spectacular postcard pictures of Pembrokeshire it's not hard to understand why I and so many others have a great admiration and adoration for our captivating Pembrokeshire County.

Crufts, the world's largest dog show, is on this weekend at the NEC in Birmingham and Sue, Kelly and Natalie are all there representing Coastal Cottages and The Woof Guide.

So if you're in the area between today and 13th March pop along with your four legged friend to Hall 4, stand 144 to say hello (or bow wow.) You will be given a very warm welcome plus loads of information on dog friendly holidays in Pembrokeshire and the invaluable Woof Guide. Tails are sure to be wagging!

Happy St. Davids Day!

It's a beautiful spring day here in Pembrokeshire and the first daffodils are peeping out. Spring has sprung with a vengeance after what seemed like an awfully long winter. Here in Coastal Cottages HQ we're stocked up on Welsh cakes and are sporting our daffodils proudly, particularly after the rugby on Saturday (come on boys!)

There are all sorts of events on all over the county which are sure to put a spring in anyone's step. What better time to visit St. Davids itself - there are a variety of events on in the cathedral and exhibitions on in Oriel Y Parc visitor centre. There are St. Davids Day concerts on this evening - including Puncheston and Neyland. It's a great time of year to visit the national Botanic Garden of Wales near Carmarthen (open daily from 10am) - the recent weather conditions mean that the gardens should be set for a wonderful display this spring. There are photography workshops being held at the National Trust nature reserve at Stackpole this week and next - a perfect way to capture spring in Pembrokeshire in a wonderfully diverse setting. For something a little bit different, The Torch Theatre in Milford Haven is host to a co-production between the National Theatre of Wales and the Nofit state circus. There are also lots of local pubs and restaurants offering delicious Welsh menus this week - it's not just about leeks you know!

Plans are afoot here for Valentines day - there's no better place than Pembrokeshire for romantic walks on the beach followed by a picnic in a beautiful setting or some delicious pub grub overlooking the sea.

Ruby is planning on a romantic walk on the beach at Abermawr, Sarah is being whisked off for a romantic dinner for two, Annie is out for dinner in Broad Haven, Rona spent yesterday with a bottle of cava and picnic overlooking the sea at Manorbier, Ann will be at Newgale this evening to watch the sunset and Sadie is waiting to be swept off her feet by a surprise this evening - what a lot of romantics there are here in the Coastal Cottages office!

See another side of Pembrokeshire

When people think of Pembrokeshire the first things that usually spring to mind are the beautiful beaches and coastline. It's easy to forget about the contrasting yet stunning inland scenery and the Preseli Mountains - rich in history and dotted with standing stones, stone circles and cromlechs. If you have missed Derek Brockway's new series of Weather Man Walking it is well worth catching episode two again, as Derek walks the 8 mile circular walk from Maenchlochog to Foel Cwmcerwyn. It's a fascinating area - follow the ancient Golden Way (a neolithic trading route), see the home of the bluestones of Stonehenge and many sites in the area are steeped in the Arthurian legend.

My favourite walks in the Preselies are up Mynachlog Ddu and through the old slate quarries at Rosebush (followed by delicious lunch in The Old Post Office.) When the weather allows, Annie grabs her chance and can be found snow boarding down the mountains followed by warming up in Tafarn Sinc - a popular local pub with a unique atmosphere. Ruby loves walking along one of the top tracks at this time of year to watch starlings in their magnificent displays and Sarah is also a fan of the ever-popular Tafarn Sinc. Sue loves to walk to the top with a picnic - the views from Preseli Top are breathtaking, particularly on a clear day when one can see the whole of Pembrokeshire from the trig point and even over to Ireland. There are several galleries, studios and workshops in the area if walking is not your thing, as well as Pant Mawr Cheeses and great places to eat.

The wild and untamed Preseli Mountains are just another part of diverse Pembrokeshire well worth exploring.

Our top ten for January...

January is off to a flying start here in the Coastal Cottages office and our special offer short breaks are going like hot cakes.

On the subject of hot cakes, this morning we have been discussing the best places in Pembrokeshire for cakes and hot chocolates - just the thing to beat the January blues and warm up when the weather is as wet and wild as it is at the moment! But what could be more snug than cwtching up with a huge tankard of hot choccie complete with marshmallows, whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles whilst the wind howls and the rain lashes down against the windows. So please see our top 10 Pembrokeshire hot chocolates for January, in no particular order:

1. The Sands Cafe at Newgale - complete with fabulous views of the beach.

2. The Bench in St. Davids - top notch hot chocolate.

3. The Moon and Sixpence in Haverfordwest - huge mug-fulls and the perfect break after shopping in our county town.

4. No. 14 for Tea in Fishguard. We recommend the full works - hot chocolate with cream, chocolate buttons and a flake, plus the mouth-watering patisserie and chocolate shop.

5. Fron Las in Newport - a perfect pet friendly place where your dog will also be very welcome.

6. The Ocean Restaurant in Tenby - overlooking the harbour.

7. The Pirate Cafe in Amroth - right on the sea front and lovely to sit outside, if the weather allows.

8. The National Trust Tea Rooms at Stackpole Quay - a beautiful setting and loads of fresh local produce.

9. The Georges in Haverfordwest - hot chocolate so thick and rich, one just isn't enough.

10. Cafe Q in Narberth - fab cakes and a great place to meet up with friends.

Rocking around the Christmas Tree!

We're all rocking around the Christmas tree here in the office and are bouncing around like over-excited Christmas elves (well some of us are anyway!)

Sue enjoyed a festive visit to Narberth on Saturday, especially the mulled wine offered in various shops and cafes. It's a gorgeous place to visit but particularly at this time of year and makes a lovely change from being pushed and shoved in packed city centre department stores. Amy is enjoying sampling mulled wine in local pubs and Ruby is planning a pre-Christmas surf at Newgale followed by hot chocolate in the Sands Cafe to warm up afterwards (definitely in my top 5 best hot chocolates in Pembrokeshire.) Mel has been making mince pies for us all and Sadie is enjoying soaking up the Christmas magic aound Haverfordwest. Jan is taking her grand-daughters to see Father Christmas in his grotto at Folly Farm near Kilgetty and I have all the local YFC carol singers descending on my house tomorrow night!

Other events on around the county include carol concerts in St. Davids Cathedral and Scolton Manor on 14th December. Scolton Manor, near Haverfordwest, is also holding a magical Christmas tree display with gifts and toys and a Christmas exhibition. The wonderful candlelit festival of Nine Lesson and carols is on in St. Davids Cathedral on 22nd December or if you prefer a festive panto, Jack and the Beanstalk is being performed in the Torch Theatre in Milford Haven on 22nd December and Beauty and the Beast is on in Theatr Gwaun in Fishguard on 23rd December. And if things do go a bit flat after Christmas, don't forget the Tenby Boxing day swim!

Walking in a Winter Wonderland!

Here in the office Sarah won the battle to put the Christmas tree up in November and it looks like a glittering grotto now. Presents are starting to appear beneath it too!

Pembrokeshire has been transformed into a beautiful winter wonderland; cold and crisp with clear blue sky and the Preseli Mountains are dusted with snow. It's the perfect time to wrap up warm and go for a bracing walk then warm up with a hot chocolate or mulled wine in front of a roaring fire in a local pub - sounds good? Then have a look at our late availability for Christmas and New Year.

The Christmas countdown continues - Jan finished her Christmas shopping months ago, Sue was in Carmarthen yesterday and I was rushing around a very festive and bustling Narberth in the snow on Friday weighed down with bags of presents (mainly for myself!) Amy is planning on finishing hers (or at least starting it) in Tenby and Sadie has stocked up after visiting the Christmas market at Picton Castle, near Haverfordwest.

For those of you struggling to think of ideas, a Coastal Cottages or Activity Wales gift voucher would make a refreshing change from Christmas socks/soap/knitwear!

The Christmas countdown

A recent article in The Times featured St Davids and reiterated what we all keep saying - it's the perfect place for a weekend break. The article described the tiny city as the jewel in the crown of Pembrokeshire, with its magnificent cathedral, fascinating Bishop's Palace, charming little streets and the spectacular coastline nearby. The appeal is year-round but now is a perfect time to visit, especially in the run up to Christmas.

The candle-lit Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols in St. Davids Cathedral in December is not to be missed, and the city's shops are perfect for finding unique and quirky presents. Mel recommends Christmas shopping in Window on Wales on Cross Square, complete with mulled wine. Other events on around Pembrokeshire in the run up to the festive season include a Christmas market at Picton Castle near Haverfordwest on 27th November - with more than fifty stalls selling unique gifts, crafts and stocking fillers in a beautiful wintry setting. The state rooms will be decked with traditional Victorian decorations and on 4th December there is also a Christmas wreath making workshop. On 3rd December there is a concert of Christmas music in St. Marys Church in Haverfordwest and from 3rd to 5th December Saundersfoot harbour is host to the St. Nicholas Christmas market - with stalls, Santa's grotto and reindeer plus cookery demonstrations. Sadie and I are both planning on heading to Narberth to finish our Christmas shopping - it's the perfect place to find the most gorgeous and memorable of presents (for myself!)

With only six weeks to go, there's a fierce debate raging here in the office over whether it's too soon to put our Christmas tree up!

Think Pink!

Wednesday 20th October is Coastal Cottages of Pembrokeshire's Pink Day! We are hoping to raise as much money as we possibly can in aid of Breast Cancer as October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and the office will be decked out with pink balloons and banners plus everyone will be dressed head to toe in pink (yes, everyone.) So if you're passing call in for a glass of pink fizz and the not-to-be-missed pink bake sale. Sarah's Victoria sponges are going to sell out in no time. There have been various fundraising games and competitions going on here over the past few weeks, and competition has been fierce! Coastal Cottages will donate £1 for every booking we take that day and will also double the amount we make on the day too.

So on a drab and grey October day, think PINK!

Keep on Running...(and swimming...and cycling!)

The Long Course Weekend was a great event - congratulations to all of those who took part!

Everyone enjoyed it, even the marshals, and Tenby was buzzing with swimmers, cyclists and runners from all over the country. There was a great atmosphere all weekend and the weather was fantastic. Even the chilly wind of Friday evening didn't put off the indefatigable swimmers, and all three days were also great for spectating.

The weekend also saw the launch of Ironman Wales - all set for 11th September 2011. It is sure to be another amazing event so keep up the training!

It's 1st September already - the nights are beginning to draw in now but the weather is still fab and the sea is wonderfully warm. September is set to be a spectacular month and there are all sorts of things on around the county. It's a great time of year to be here in Pembrokeshire because...

This coming weekend, 4th and 5th September, St. Davids is hosting its Really Wild Food Countryside Festival - a great way to learn more about the countryside, to enyoy it, cook it and eat it. The festival is packed full of delicious local produce, cookery demonstrations, rural traditions, music, story telling and entertainment.

On Sunday 4th September the annual county classic car run is on, with a route that covers most of Pembrokeshire - great to take part in or just park up with a picnic and wave at the participants as they fly, or chug, by.

To add some late summer colour there are a host of new art exhibitions opening all over Pembrokeshire in the coming weeks, including Picton Castle near Haverfordwest, The Torch Theatre in Milford Haven, St. Davids and the West Wales Arts Centre in Fishguard.

Tenby Arts Festival is on from 18th to 25th September - a great week to visit the town as it's less crowded then in the height of summer and it's a perfect opportunity to take in the wonderful artistic talent the town is home to.

And for all good sports out there, 24th to 26th September is of course The Longcourse Weekend in Tenby. Whether you take part in the entire triathlon or just attempt the marathon, it's the taking part that counts.

September is also a great month for music lovers - St. Davids Cathedral is the venue for the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and Welsh coprano Catrin Aur Davies on 4th September but if that's not quite your thing then there is Youthfest on 11th September at Withybush showground - a music festival organised by and for young people.

September is also pupping season - our local Grey Seal colonies are busy with their pups and my favourite thing about this time of year is creeping around the coastal path spotting Grey Seal pups in the hidden coves below. Everyone here in the office is looking forward to enjoying the good weather and quiet beaches over the coming weeks - and of course the dog bans on may of our beaches have now ended.

So make the most of it - it should be a September to remember!

Life's a Beach...

A recent MSN feature listed Britain's top 10 little known beaches and two of those on the list are in Pembrokeshire - Barafundle and Druidston.

Here in Pembrokeshire there are over 50 beaches and no other county in Britain has more blue flag beaches. From long stretches of sand to secret hidden coves, there are so many to choose from. So, here are the favourites from those in the know here in the office; Sarah chooses Broad Haven every time and her second beach of choice is Freshwater West. Freshwater West is famed for its long golden sands, surf and high sand dunes and in 2009 was used as a film location for the new Robin Hood film and also the forthcoming Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The beach is also a favourite of Rona's, as well as the secret Swan Lake Bay which was frequented by pirates long ago. Ruby's favourite beach is also a secret cove which she has refused to reveal (no doubt she is not keen on the idea of all of us polling up on a quiet Sunday afternoon!) Another of Ruby's favourites is Druidston, which was also voted for by Jan. Fran and Leanne both opted for the spectacular stretch that is Newgale and Sadie is particularly fond of magnificent Marloes. Nik is most keen on Tenby's south beach and Skrinkle Haven, near Manorbier. Caroline has voted for Aberporth whereas Sue is a fan of Barafundle, Amy has opted for Amroth, Kelly is keen on Poppit Sands and Mickey enjoys Coppet Hall near Saundersfoot. Linda struggled to choose her favourite as we're so spoilt for choice in this part of the world but she visits Abermawr most often as her dog can walk the beach with her and also loves Newgale and Traethllyfn. I spent a blissful afternoon at Musselwick last Saturday and we had the whole beach to ourselves.

So here's hoping that the weather will brighten up and we'll all get the opportunity to enjoy our beautiful beaches!

Yet another fascinating thing to do in Pembrokeshire at this time of year is a bit of bird watching - the county offers wonderful opportunities to see various species, from waders and wildfowl on the river to migratory seabirds and birds of prey.

Mel has been telling us about the fascinating Osprey centre near Aberystwyth. There are also wonderful places to see Red Kites, such as Tregarron (near Cardigan.) The Welsh Wildlife Centre at Cilgerran is a great place to explore a reed bed habitat and spot its inhabitants. There are wonderful bird watching sites all over the county, from Strumble Head and Nevern Estuary to The Gann near Dale and the lily ponds at Bosherston.

It's a great time of year to visit Skomer Island (the boat runs daily from Martins Haven) to see the bustling colonies of seabirds - spot Puffins, Choughs, Manx Shearwaters, Razorbills, Guillemots, Kittiwakes and even Short Eared Owls and Peregrines. There are weekly RSPB guided walks on Ramsey Island (get the boat from St. Justinians near St. Davids) and just walking the coastal path will give you a bird's eye view! Or for something quieter, don't forget the secret waterways of the River Cleddau and quiet woodlands. So get twitching!

It wouldn't be a British summer without a bit of rain would it? But the sun is shining again today and the forecast for August is good (apparently.)

This week members of the Coastal Cottages and Activity Wales team have been at The Royal Welsh Show at Builth Wells - today is the last day so pop along to see them if you can but don't forget your wellies! And it's just under four weeks until the Pembrokeshire County Show at the county showground near Haverfordwest. Running from Tuesday 17th to Thursday 19th August, the three days offer a variety of displays, competitions, shopping and entertainment. Sarah, Amy and I are already making plans for those few days - which involve zebra print wellies, macs and umbrellas. The show makes a great day out and is the perfect time to catch up with friends over the mouth-wateringly good pig roast whilst watching everything from motorbike stunt teams to beautiful dressage competitions, stock up on local produce (the fudge is not to be missed) and makes a change to the beach. From the show rings to the wonderful food hall, it's packed full of Pembrokeshire's finest. Just take those wellies just in case!

The Secret Gardens

The fabulous weather continues and as I said in my last post, there is so much more to do at this time of year than sit in front of a huge flat screen watching the football (controversial, I know.)

If Pembrokeshire's beaches aren't quite your thing, this is also the perfect time of year to visit the many beautiful gardens in the county - from the more well-known such as Picton Castle and Colby Woodland Gardens to the most hidden and secret of gardens.

Many gardens throughout Pembrokeshire open their gates to the public throughout the summer and this Saturday Glenowen cottage garden near Llanstadwell will be open for the day. On a much larger scale, Picton Castle near Haverfordwest is set in 40 acres of woodland and has one of the largest private collections of exotic and unique plants in Wales. On 30th June the Chapterhouse Theatre Co. are staging a production of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice in the beautiful grounds of the Castle and on 13th July there is a guided RHS walk around the walled garden. Colby Woodland Gardens near Amroth always have an exciting schedule of events over the summer and The Welsh Wildlife Centre near Cardigan is hosting a series of guided walks led by a local medical herbalist on traditional remedies and uses for wild flowers, trees and plants. Other gardens well worth visiting include Bro Meigan gardens and tea room near the Preseli Mountains, Upton Castle gardens near Cosheston, the walled garden at Stackpole, Penlan Uchaf farm garden near Fishguard, the National Botanic Garden of Wales near Carmarthen - the list goes on and many of our wonderful castles also have beautiful gardens to explore (Laugharne and Hean Castle in Saundersfoot.) We have wonderful garden centres too - which cater for coastal windswept gardens like mine. Here in the office Cecilia and Julia are the gardening experts, always good for advice and gardening tips (and plant swapping too!)

How to avoid the world cup...

I doubt that anyone can have escaped the fact that the world cup kicks off this Friday - it's all everyone was talking about here in our staffroom over lunch today (and was met with a rather glazed look from me.) Leanne has organised a world cup sweepstake and Sarah has been collecting football stickers - I may be in the minority but will be doing everything I can to avoid anything vaguely football related over the next month! Sadie is in agreement.

Pembrokeshire is the ideal place to sit it out - local pubs are showing the matches but the next few weeks are going to be the perfect time to make the most of abandoned beaches - long walks and swims with just a few fellow football widows will be blissful (just look at that picture of a deserted Druidston!) And think of the quiet shops and restaurants! Last week some of the ladies here enjoyed a girls evening out in Carmarthen, with its new cinema, restaurants and shops, and i'm sure we'll be heading back soon as an antidote to the football madness.

Some non-football related events on over the next few weeks include photography workshops on Skomer Island, a guided walk around Ramsey Island with an RSPB warden on 10th June, a butterfly workshop and guided walk around the Teifi marshes at the Welsh Wildlife Centre near Cardigan on 13th June and a new exhibition of ceramics is on at Picton Castle until the end of the month. Picton Castle is also hosting music, picnics and croquet on 13th June (ready for the approaching national picnic week) and on 17th June there is a summer concert in St. Mary's Church in Tenby. So the next few weeks don't have to revolve around football - and I know that nearly everyone here in the office will disagree with me (and most of the country in fact) but there is so much more to a Pembrokeshire June and July than sitting in front of a huge TV. I'm actually quite looking forward to it after all!

Oak before Ash, we're in for a splash

Ash before Oak, we're in for a soak.....

I'm sure you know the old saying and the great news is that the Oak is out well before the Ash this year so here's hoping! Pre-dating the Met Office by a long way, the long range forecast should be wonderful in that case. We have all enjoyed a scorching week and are hoping that this sizzling weather will last until October. So for a perfect Pembrokeshire summer, here are some top tips on where to go, what to do and what to see from those in the know here in the office...

Sarah's vote is for people watching on the beach at Broad Haven, Sue recommends Coppet Hall beach and then a walk through the tunnel to Saundersfoot, Ann says drinks sitting outside The Sloop at Porthgain, Cecilia is all for walking along the banks of the River Cleddau which is so beautiful and tranquil on a summer's evening, Rona enjoys kayaking from Coppet Hall towards Monkstone Point, perfect at high tide when you have the beach to yourselves as no-one else can get there. Amy loves catching some rays on the beach at Amroth, Mel had an idyllic picnic on the estuary at Laugharne followed by a walk along towards Dylan Thomas' Boathouse and warmly recommends it, Ruby would choose rowing around Llys Y Fran reservoir as her ultimate summertime day out and for Fran it's a day at Barafundle Bay. The list is endless - so make the most of it!

A sense of "Plaice"

The wonderful Pembrokeshire Fish Week is fast approaching! One of the most popular annual festivals in Pembrokeshire, Fish Week is running from 26th June to 4th July and is jam-packed with over fifty events going on all over the county. From cookery demonstrations and fishing lessons to family fun days and seafood suppers in local pubs. As well as celebrating all things fishy, Pembrokeshire Fish Week also aims to raise awareness of our beautiful coastline. It is not a week just for foodies but for anyone keen to explore Pembrokeshire, learn more about our long fishing heritage and see another side of the county. There are activities for all ages - Sue will be taking her family to Milford Haven for the family opening day on the marina and on a seashore safari, Mel will be crab fishing with her family, Cecilia likes the sound of the talks on marine wildlife and an island ramble whereas Sadie is keen to see celebrity chefs in action in cookery demonstrations. Kayaking combined with fishing then cooking your catch on the beach afterwards is bound to appeal to Ruby, I don't want to miss seafood suppers with wine tasting in local pubs and Sarah meanwhile is all for sing-along sea shanties!

This wonderful week-long fish-tastic feast for the senses will really bring a sense of "plaice" to Pembrokeshire so if you are looking for somewhere to stay then get in touch!

Newport Bay Spring Festival

The weather is still fabulous and long may it continue!

We're all making the most of it and next weekend is the Newport Bay Spring Festival. From 30th April to 3rd May Newport will be bustling with various events, activities and workshops being held on the beach, up the mountain, in the water, on the water and all over the village. From kayak racing to maypole dancing, sea fishing to guided walks, golfing to pottery, an arts trail around the great selection of local galleries to live music in the Memorial Hall and of course the famous duck race! There is a packed programme of events and the festival offers a great opportunity to explore the local area. I like the sound of the kayaking sea trek up the coast with a picnic at Aberrhigian, Sadie is keen on the walking and Ruby is all fired up for the mountain bike racing - between us we could do a triathlon!
Mel is keen to attend Barley Saturday in Cardigan which is also on Saturday 1st May - the parade of horses and vintage cars through the town centre is an amazing spectacle. Calling in to Newport for some live music in one of the pubs on the way home sounds a perfect day out!

The wonderful Pembrokeshire Coast footpath has been voted the best coastal walk in Britain - of course it has I hear you cry! This year also marks the 40th anniversary of the 186 mile path.

So, in honour of the path that we're so lucky to have on our doorsteps, I have conducted a little survey around the office to find out which few miles are the general favourites if not walking the whole length!

Cecilia's favourite stretch is Porthclais to Porthgain, Sadie chose Abereiddy to Porthgain (via The Sloop), Ruby's vote is for Newgale to Nolton, Leanne's Newgale to Broad Haven (she is very energetic), Danny is all for Wisemans Bridge to Saundersfoot (via the pub and then a taxi back), Fran went for Broad Haven to Little Haven when the tide is out, Mel warmly recommends Manorbier around the Priest's nose and Coomb, Rona from Angle to Freshwater West and Linda wasn't keen to reveal her favourite stretch (who can blame her, I doubt she'll want the rest of us trekking along behind her) but she has admitted that it's Abercastle north towards Abermawr. I love walking south from St. Brides round to Martin's Haven taking in the fab view of Skomer, or north up to Little Haven with a well-deserved little drinkie in The Swan at the end of it. One of the best ways to experience the spectacular scenery along the coastal path is to get picked up by the coastal buses (the Puffin Shuttle, Coastal Cruiser, Poppit Rocket and the Strumble Shuttle) at the end of your walk rather than having to re-trace your footsteps back to base camp. The fantastic weather we're having at the moment makes it a perfect time to walk the path, before it gets too hot (chance would be a fine thing but here's hoping!) So don't forget your walking boots, plus swimming costume for a quick refreshing dip en route.

A busy Easter Monday!

Easter Monday here in the office and we're recovering from over-indulging yesterday - Sadie, Sarah, Mel and I are comparing notes on the Easter eggs we gave and received, Easter egg hunts and what a beautiful Easter Sunday it was! But there's a lot on today too and it seems that the Easter fun isn't over yet...

Today of course is the first of Rosie Swale Pope's 26 marathons in 26 days challenge in aid of two children's hospices. The challenge is starting off in Tenby and various members of the Coastal Cottages of Pembrokeshire and Activity Wales teams will be running in support of Rosie. Other events on today and during the coming weeks include a spring walk in Canaston Woods, a concert of Medieval and Tudor music in Llangwm to celebrate the 800th anniversary of St. Jeromes Church and an Easter Fayre in Llanrhian all on later today. On 7th April there is a family night in the De Valance Pavilion in Tenby with children's entertainments and activities, on 13th April a children's monster workshop is being held by local artist Buzz Knapp Fisher in Fishguard and on 14th April there is a twilight woodland walk around Colby Woodland Gardens, near Amroth. So there is plenty going on during the last week of the Easter holidays, whatever the weather. It's a gorgeous time of year to make the most of Pembrokeshire; the county is full of the joys of Spring despite the somewhat blustery weather and it's also worth making the most of the beaches before the dog restrictions come in from 1st May.

Run a mile with Rosie for Ty Hafan

Adventurer Rosie Swale Pope takes a look at her new-look Icebird ahead of her 26 marathons in 26 days challenge, together with Matthew and Sophie Evans, of Activity Wales and Coastal Cottages Pembrokeshire, who are organising the new Tenby marathon. Observer pic.

Would you like the opportunity of running a marathon with round-the-world adventurer Rosie Swale Pope MBE?
Well if so, you will have the chance to do so in just over a week’s time.
Twenty-five volunteers are being sought to each run a mile with the Tenby grandmother as she embarks on her 26 marathons in 26 days challenge.
Rosie is stepping out on her latest epic task to raise money for two children’s hospices.
The first marathon on her 681.2-mile journey will be in her very own home town as she launches Tenby’s new Wales Marathon.
Rosie is teaming up with Matthew Evans, chief executive of Activity Wales, and company director Scott Powell to promote the exciting three-day gruelling event which is being hosted by Tenby in September.
Rosie, 63, will run the 26.2-mile course on Easter Monday, April 5, pulling her famous cart Icebird, which accompanied her for a large part of her 21,000-mile global trek.
But the organisers are looking for people to join her to run ‘Rosie pace’ a mile each in a relay.
The willing volunteers will be welcome to raise their own sponsorship for Ty Hafan, the family hospice in Cardiff, and Helen House in Oxford, the world’s first children’s hospice, and Douglas House, also in Oxford, the first for young people.
“To be able to say you have run a marathon with Rosie Swale Pope MBE is quite something,” Matthew told the Observer.
“And we are giving people that opportunity right on their doorstep,” he continued.
“If every person who volunteers helps Rosie by raising £40 each that’s an extra £1,000 for the fund which will be a great boost.”
All the 25 runners will then be asked to join Rosie for the last mile and follow her into Tudor Square.
Mayor of Tenby, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane, will be giving the event a civic salute, but at the time of going to press, she had not revealed whether or not she would actually be accompanying Rosie for one of the one-mile legs!
The Wales Marathon itself will be Pembrokeshire’s first ever measured marathon and will be held on Sunday, September 26, as part of the Long Course Weekend. The whole event will include the 1,500 and 3,000-metre Wales Swim on Friday, September 24, 40, 80 or 120-mile Wales Sportif bike rides on the Saturday, followed by the full marathon and a half marathon which will start and finish in Tenby on the Sunday.
The event is being organised by Matthew, Scott and Activity Wales. Both are well-known athletes, with Matthew having completed 10 marathons in 10 days and the Ironman Austria last year, while this year, he will be racing Ironman Lanzarote in May, before he attempts Ironman UK in August in fancy dress! The latter he will be raising money for Rotary.
The marathon course will see runners complete loops heading out from Tenby towards Manorbier and back along The Ridgeway to Penally and Tenby.
Rosie plans to start her journey a week on Monday at around 8 am, starting from the top of Tudor Square, finishing in the centre of Tenby’s Tudor Square mid-afternoon.

“If you are available on Monday and don’t fancy running, please come out in Tenby, Penally, Lydstep, Lydstep Beach or along The Ridgeway and support Rosie,” said Scott.
Participants at the September event will be able to raise funds for their own charities, but there will be an overall charity that the event will support.
Participants can enter as many of the races as they want, with finishers receiving medals which will, if all three are completed, form a jigsaw to create the unique Long Course Weekend medal. Rosie’s other 25 marathons will all be in Wales and England.
Said Rosie: “I am very proud to be running the new Tenby marathon first and I will be telling people about how wonderful Tenby and Pembrokeshire is everywhere I go.
“I was inspired by Matthew doing his 10 marathons in 10 days and also comedian Eddie Izzard who did 43 marathons in 51 days,” she continued.
“I have been in training, but I will get fitter as the marathons go on. The main thing is I complete all 26 of them, even if I end up crawling on my knees to finish. It is a huge challenge which I am looking forward to.”
Rosie has just had her new-look Icebird back, complete with a new cover which she had fitted in Surrey and all the logos of her supporters which have been put on by Rob Thomas.
“I am so lucky to have supporters like Coastal Cottages Pembrokeshire who have had faith in me right from the start when I left home on my round-the-world challenge, and also support from Jeff, Ann Rowell and Rotary, and all my friends, family and neighbours,” added Rosie.
Some of the marathons Rosie will be undertaking are half marathon routes, so she will run them twice, while when she reaches Brighton, she will be running the route on the actual marathon day.

Busy times in Coastal Cottages

It's all go here in Coastal Cottages this week - our most exciting news is that Gemma had a baby girl last Friday so we all send our very best wishes and congratulations to Gemma and family! And on a sadder note, tonight is Ann C's retirement party in Wolfscastle; Ann has retired from the company after 22 years so plans are afoot to give her a send-off to be remembered! Ann will be sadly missed and we hope she will find the time to come and visit us here in the office.

It's a busy time of year, with Mothers Day on Sunday and Easter drawing ever nearer - the weeks are flying. Ruby is off on a short break holiday near Newgale next week, Sadie is moving house and in a few days time I am off to a friend's wedding in Japan. I have been stocking up on presents and souvenirs from Pembrokeshire - (my suitcase is already way over my baggage allowance; those Welsh cakes certainly are loaded with fruit.) And for the perfect wedding present what could be more fitting than a traditional Welsh lovespoon (there is a great selection to choose from in various shops in Solva, St. Davids and Narberth) and a beautiful Welsh woollen throw from Melin Tregwynt, near Abermawr.

Finally we all wish Ann C a very happy retirement - we're sorry to see you go and hope you find the time in between all the things you have got planned to come and see us all!

Happy St. David's Day!

Tomorrow of course is 1st March, St. David's Day. Celebrations in honour of our patron saint are going on all over Wales this weekend but there is surely no better place to celebrate than in St. Davids itself, with the magnificent cathedral (which stands on the site of the monastery founded by St. David himself and once a popular place of pilgrimage) and nearby St. Non's chapel where St. David is reputed to have been born circa 500AD.

There is plenty going on all over the county, including a cawl cooking championship and food and craft festival in Saundersfoot. Local pubs and restaurants have mouth-watering menus in honour of all things Welsh - Ruby will be dining on roast Welsh lamb with Pembrokeshire new potatoes tomorrow, and I need to stock up on tasty local leeks (Gate to Plate farm shop at Freystrop, near Haverfordwest, is my favourite.) Welsh cakes and bara brith will be doing the rounds too I hope! Little Welsh ladies will be out in force but i'm not so sure about Welsh rugby shirts after Friday night's performance against France.

Spring has sprung!

What a match last Saturday - Shane Williams we adore you! We're all still smiling and hope Wales are on to a winning streak.

Spring has finally sprung at last - the first snowdrops have appeared, daffodils are pushing their cheerful heads out and the first lambs are in the fields (waking me up with their bleating and "maah maaah.")

This weekend both Sadie and Kelly are off on Pembrokeshire mini breaks (not together!) Sadie will be exploring Abermawr and Kelly will be spending time in Solva - so i'm sure they will both have all sorts of stories and tips for us next week! Tomorrow I have a lunch date in Haverfordwest and then an evening with the YFC in Fishguard (so watch out Fishguard!) I will also be taking my pup for a walk at Port Lion, her favourite walk of this week and perfect for exploring the shoreline, woods and then up through the fields to take in the gorgeous views over the River Cleddau and towards the north and the Preseli Mountains (that view is of course more for my benefit than hers.) Meanwhile Ann B will be spending time in Llanrhian and Jan is heading to St. Ishmaels to the wonderfully well stocked garden centre, which has reminded me that I also need to go. We're all making the most of the warmer weather (slightly warmer anyway) and the wonderful optimistic feeling that comes with the start of Spring!

I'm not even going to mention last week's rugby match between Wales and England, and don't get Sarah started on the subject! Fingers are again crossed for the match between Wales and Scotland this afternoon. Sarah is sporting her Welsh socks (and everything else) again today and will be cheering our boys on in Haverfordwest - she has just swept out of the office in a little whirlwind of excitement. Ruby and I will be straining to hear the game on the radio here in the office whilst Linda and Alison are living it up at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff - here's hoping they will prove to be lucky charms.

Tomorrow of course is St. Valentines Day and Ann is planning on a walk on the beach at Abercastle followed by dinner near Solva whilst Ruby will be releasing a beautiful paper lantern from the top of Plumstone Mountain, near Hayscastle. Kelly is planning on a stroll along Newgale and I have been dropping hints about being taken out for dinner all week as there are some mouth-watering Valentines menus in various local restaurants - i'll have to wait and see but will also be walking my busy Beagle at Marloes Sands as a long trek along the spectacular beach is the best way to tire her out!

In the meantime though, come on Wales!

Yes it's the time of year that Sarah saves all of her annual leave for - the 6 Nations kicks off this afternoon! She is kitted out in her Welsh rugby shirt and socks (and pants too.) We're all feeling very optimistic and are warming up ready to sing "Bread of Heaven" and our national anthem when Wales V England kicks off at 5pm (even one of the puppies in puppy class was sporting a Welsh dragon on his tiny jacket this morning.) Local pubs are all showing the games - Sarah and Leanne will be watching in Haverfordwest, I will be in Little Haven, Ruby will be watching in Fishguard and Sadie will be in the pub in Clarbeston Road. So come on boys, don't let us down!

Be My Valentine?

Here in the office we were all thrilled to receive a visit from Emma and her beautiful baby Tommy yesterday, who cut a dash in his tiger suit and clearly enjoyed having all of the ladies here cooing and clucking over him!

We're all busy making plans for the approaching Valentines Day and half term. Sue has spotted some delicious looking heart-themed treats in Lollies traditional sweet shop in Tenby (hint hint.) Sadie is off on a romantic break for two at Abermawr (will he or won't he? We can't help but wonder here in the office!) Jan is planning a romantic walk along the coastal path to Druidston (here's hoping she'll be treated to lunch afterwards!) And Ruby is being treated to either horse riding or quad biking. Sarah T meanwhile will no doubt be inundated with flowers and chocolates.

Picton Castle are hosting a 'Signs of Spring' walk over half term, a perfect opportunity to see the first stirrings of Spring in the beautiful grounds. There are also 'Wake up to Wildlife' activity days going on at Colby Woodland Gardens, near Amroth. Jan is planning on taking her grand-daughters to Folly Farm and Ruby is hoping to take her nephew crabbing in Fishguard. I'm just looking forward to Spring - bring on the daffodils!

Getting through January

We have thawed out a bit here at last - I have been enjoying walking my puppy on the beach now that she is less likely to catch a chill on her bald tummy, followed by the best hot chocolate to be had at Newgale in the Sands cafe. Sadie meanwhile would recommend The Moon and Sixpence in Haverfordwest for a sweet treat to warm up and she is also busy making plans for the Welsh Valentine's Day, St Dwynwen's Day, coming up on 25th January. There certainly seems to be something in the air as three of my friends have become engaged in the last three weeks - all that snow seems to have spurred the gentlemen into action at last! Ann B meanwhile recommends the Indian restaurant in The Ship in Solva as an ideal way to beat the cold. Last week we all enjoyed a delicious and calorific slice of Jan's speciality chocolate cake - she battled through the elements to bring it into the office and fortunately both Jan and the enormous cake made it in one piece. Now we're all tucking in to chocolate birthday cake brought in by Mickey, who tried to get away with not telling anyone that it was his birthday yesterday - one really can't get away with that sort of thing in this office! I know it sounds like all we ever talk about here is food (with chocolate being a recurring theme) but that's not really the case!

Last Saturday was the Hunt Ball (Sarah T is off today recovering!) and next Saturday is the Snow Ball in Little Haven, in aid of local charity Adam's Bucketful of Hope; a great cause and a good way to beat the January blues.

Happy New Year to you all!

After welcoming in the new year in style, 2010 has got off to a chilly start, even here in usually mild Pembrokeshire. Surprisingly there were still takers for various new years day swims around the county - an ideal way to cure the after effects of New Years Eve but I wasn't brave enough! Despite the freezing temperatures the scenery is beautiful - clear skies and white fields as far as the eye can see leading to the snow-dusted Preseli Mountains.

My colleagues have been out and about visiting cottages - see the photo of pretty Ivy Tower Village in St. Florence taken by Sue, whilst others have been enjoying making snowmen (and snow women too.) Spring seems a long way off at the moment but if you can enjoy this winter wonderland, then do!

The countdown continues....only three weeks to go!

The festive season is upon us and the cottages still available for Christmas are going like hot mince pies! This weekend three of our ladies are representing Coastal Cottages at Discover Dogs at London's Earls Court 1. The wonderful woof and wag-worthy show is on from today, Saturday 14th November, to 5pm tomorrow. £15,000 to local charities!!

Coastal Cottages’ Guests donate £15,000 to the County

2009 has seen a unique venture by Coastal Cottages and their guests, resulting in over £15,000 being raised to donate to local teams and volunteers.

Matthew, Sophie and most of the team were all brought up in Pembrokeshire and they all feel so passionate about the need to support those that quite literally spend their lives
looking after our landscape.

Matthew said “ Our guests come back year after year and sometimes several times a year! They love Pembrokeshire and appreciate the natural unspoilt beauty of so many special spots along the coast, on the river and throughout the Preselis. In fact there are so many, we just get used to them! Somebody had to step up and be first; to lead the way and support the hundreds of volunteers that keep this County so very special. We are so lucky we can live and work in such an environment, so we have to give a bit back. From January 1st this year, we asked for a voluntary £2 from each and every guest to go towards projects that will help ‘leave Pembrokeshire better than they found it’. The concept was welcomed with open arms by the majority of visitors and we were staggered at the fund total so far.”

“The hardest part was finding the organisations”, says Matthew. “But Tonia Forsyth, Coastal Network Manager for Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum, was an excellent help and steered us in many directions. This fund was not to fund suits in hotel conferences drawing mind maps!! This was to help those that get their hands dirty on the ground, work for free because resources are not there or a dedicated project that can get match funding and make the monies go so much further.”

The first 3 projects to receive funds are:-

Pembrokeshire Outdoor Charter and Marine Code

The Pembrokeshire Outdoor Charter and Marine Code groups are partnership projects involving all adventure activity providers, wildlife tour boat operators and conservation organisations in Pembrokeshire. The aim is to ensure that the expanding outdoor activity industry remains sustainable for the environments and wildlife of Pembrokeshire.

The groups have developed:-

* voluntary codes of conduct to protect wildlife and the environment
* environmental training events for outdoor instructors, skippers and crew to raise awareness about the importance of Pembrokeshire’s environments, wildlife and current threats to biodiversity. 180 activity leaders trained this year
* accurate database and regular meetings of all adventure activities providers, wildlife tour boat operators and conservationists.

Pembrokeshire Rivers Trust

Pembrokeshire Rivers Trust was formed in 2002 with the aim of restoring and safeguarding the rivers, lakes and wetlands of Pembrokeshire. The Trust was awarded charitable status in 2004. The objectives of the Trust are to:
* Promote awareness of environmental issues and best practice
* Promote recreational enjoyment of rivers, lakes and wetlands
* Undertake research and development to help restore damaged habitats
The £2,000 donation from Coastal Cottages will be used to provide match funding for a habitat improvement project on the Eastern Cleddau.

With the Environment Agency Wales providing 90% of funding, the Coastal Cottages donation (in partnership with PRT) is effectively worth £20,000.

NARC - Neptune’ s Army of Rubbish Cleaners

NARC was formed in 2005. Dave Kennard says “Our first underwater clean up took place at Stackpole Quay. Where the group collected 630 angling weights. The group is a voluntary organisation and has taken part in underwater clean ups all along the Pembrokeshire coastline from Stackpole to Fishguard. We also take part in local community projects and this year did a clean in Milford Haven with the local sea scouts. The donation will help us keep active in clean ups, but also help us with educational programmes. As underwater litter is a hard subject to cover because most people can't see the rubbish. The volunteers quite often find themselves on clean ups cutting free wildlife and cleaning all of the corals we have. So out of sight now, may not mean that it's not now known about.”

Matthew continues “We still have substantial funds to literally give away, so if you know of or are part of an environmental organisation you feel will benefit from a little “Christmas Spirit” please call Coastal Cottages on 01437 765765”.

Horror! It's Halloween!

It's that time of year again and we're all debating the merits of witches versus vampires here in the office - it's a bit of a deja vu. This season Sarah T will be sporting a vampire lady get-up whilst Leanne is planning on parading around as a bat. Faye will be trick or treating and I'm trying to think of something to beat my triumphant ghost buster costume of last year (complete with real hoover). There are all sorts of seasonal events on around the county to celebrate All Hallowes Eve which perfectly coincide with half term - including Hunt the Bat in the fascinating Tudor Merchant's House in Tenby, a spooky Halloween trail around Colby Woodland Gardens and haunted castle tours around Picton Castle. For me the scariest thing is how quickly the year is flying by.... Christmas will be upon us in two shakes of a black cat's tail!

Halloween aside, we still have late availability for this week, even for tomorrow, so it's never too late to get in touch. We're enjoying a lovely mild autumn here in the Shire - brilliant autumnal colours, beautiful sunsets, bountiful berrylicious hedgerows and bargain breaks!

Seven Swans a' swimming?

Last Friday evening we all enjoyed a fun-filled thrash bash at The Swan in Little Haven - a chance to get together and enjoy each others' company out of the office. The hordes of Coastal Cottages and Activity Wales staff descended upon the village on a beautiful balmy evening and gorged themselves on good food, good wine and even better conversation (some more crude than others!) The wine was flowing - quite literally across the table at one point and the apple and pear pie went down a storm. I must admit though, I was surprised to find other members of staff sloping off home so early (I left The Swan with a slight stumble at 1am, having had another party to get to but that's another story!) All in all we had a splendid evening and were on fine form back in the office on Saturday morning - some more bright-eyed and bushy-tailed than others.

Now October is upon us and we're enjoying beautiful Autumn weather. Half term is drawing ever nearer and we have still have some great special offers available - be quick though, as they're disappearing as quickly as a bread basket in The Swan! And it is only 85 days until Christmas!

Autumn is in the air! Or is it in fact summer at long last? We're all enjoying beautiful weather here in Pembrokeshire and we're making the most of it. Sadie enjoyed an early morning walk at Newgale yesterday and I spent Saturday at Musselwick - one of Pembrokeshire's most beautiful hidden treasures in my view, followed by a pint of prawns sitting on the sea wall in Dale. The sailing boats, dinghies and kayaks were all out in force and one could easily while away a blissful afternoon sitting on the wall looking out to sea and taking it all in - perfect for boat spotting, people watching and bumping into friends.

In other news... exciting finishing touches are being put on the 2010 Coastal Cottages of Pembrokeshire brochure - we'll keep you posted! And we still have late availability for the approaching half term in October so get in touch.

The bank holiday is upon us and the weather is at last looking a bit more settled! Plans are being hatched here in the office - Jan is off to Colby Woodland Gardens with her gorgeous granddaughters for a craft day, Leanne is planning on camping, Sarah T will be sampling local public houses (very important quality control) and today is also Camrose Vintage Working Day. Donna is heading to the French Market in Tenby and I have been busy preparing for Little Haven raft race on Monday -

re-thinking our raft design and strategy. My team is all fired up and determined to win after a near miss to another team last year- personally I think two kayaks tied together does not constitute a raft. Our raft meanwhile is a feat of engineering - made up of barrels, rope and various bits of flotsam and jetsam, complete with pirate flag! Yo ho yo ho, the pirate's life for me.

We do still have a little bit of late availability so phone our office if you're tempted by a spontaneous getaway! There is a lot going on this weekend and next weekend sees the Really Wild Food Festival in St. Davids - a wonderful celebration of food and countryside crafts originating in the wild. The two day festival does a superb job in promoting the countryside and most importantly, preservation of it. There are a huge selection of exhibitors including various traditional crafts, falconry, weavers and spinners, RSPB, National Trust and the Wildlife Trust and recycling projects. It is also a real foodie heaven, with delicious and tantalising local produce to sample and buy (don't miss The Chocolate House). Enjoy!

Here in the office Linda has been regaling us with tales of how she spent her week off last week - instead of jetting off to sunnier climes she chose to stay here in Pembrokeshire, and why would she want to leave I hear you cry!

Linda enjoyed an exciting if bumpy boat ride with Thousand Island Adventures, seeing the beautiful Pembrokeshire Islands from the water is not to be missed and she was thrilled to see a school of dolphins around Grassholm (see her photo, pretty good considering the conditions and being thrown all over the boat!) Our coastline is a perfect habitat for these fascinating creatures but they can be difficult to spot, so to see them playing and frolicking alongside the boat must have been a real treat! Another recommendation from Linda is Penrallt Garden Centre near Moylegrove (a fab location and next door to a property letting through us), a perfect place to while away a wet afternoon complete with lunch or afternoon tea in their tea rooms.

So despite the weather being somewhat unpredictable, we are all full of ideas and inspiration on what to do and where to go in Pembrokeshire!

My top tip of this week is Dash Shellfish in Little Haven - delicious, freshly caught crab. Try it either in local pubs and restaurants or buy it from Dash Shellfish directly (owned and run by a charming chappie, incidentally best man at my wedding!) There is so much delicious and fresh local produce to try here in Pembrokeshire, you could spend a week just sampling it all!

The Sound of Music....

The hills are alive with the sound of Music!

This week has seen the Fishguard International Music Festival, with a huge selection of music and events held in Fishguard, Goodwick, St. Davids Cathedral and at Rhos Y Gilwen. The festival is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a packed programme. The musical extravaganza continues until this weekend so there is still time to buy tickets and go along. The wonderful selection of classical music is sure to lift spirits in this unsettled weather!

However, if that sort isn't your sort of festival this weekend also sees the Celtic Blue Rock Festival at Llanfrynach - with a great line-up of bands, a market bazaar, glam rock bar, dance tent, arts tent, various music and arts related workshops, Green Futures zone and a children's area. The organisation behind the festival offers people the opportunity to enjoy and learn about the creative arts and profits made go straight into local community youth projects - a great cause and great entertainment too!

So whether Mendelssohn or a mosh-pit is for you, there is something to suit everyone going on. I'm going to try to make it to both if I can!

At the races....

Last night there was great amusement and hilarity to be had at the South Pembrokeshire races - sheep racing that is.

Held at Windsor Farm in Lamphey, the miserable weather didn't stop the crowds turning out and it didn't dampen spirits either! There was a huge amount of excitement and tension as the sheep assembled in the paddock and the jockeys mounted. Then, as the air horn sounded, the crowd went wild as the sheep raced to victory over a course including hedges and jumps. They are bred for speed and agility, and sheared to create a streamlined, dynamic racing machine. There was no pulling the wool over my eyes and on the fourth race my bet on "Seized Up" by "Tractor out of Oil" proved a winner. I was thrilled to collect my winnings of £4 but refused to shear it with anyone and headed off to the Baaa-becue. It may have been raining cats and dogs (and sheep) but there is still much fun to be had - ewe'd have loved it!

Phew! The summer is rolling on and temperatures are soaring! It's a busy time here - with Pembrokeshire Fish Week in full swing, Russell Crowe living it up at Freshwater West and a huge array of summer events going on. June wouldn't be complete without Wimbledon - did you see that epic Andy Murray match last night?! Although who wants to sit inside watching telly with weather as glorious as this!

We're busy bees here in the office and when we get a chance we've been enjoying exchanging news and summer plans over our new outdoor table and chairs, complete with parasol, at lunchtime. I keep hearing talk of an oncoming heatwave - it will certainly make a nice change after the last two summers.

Make a Splash!

Here I am, back in the office after a blissful month off and still aglow after the most beautiful, magical and memorable wedding.

Having caught up on all the news, we are now all looking forward to June - it seems that summer is here at last. The weather is absolutely divine and long may it continue! My kayak has at long last come out of hibernation and is raring to go, and Tessa has her boat out on the water and is putting it to excellent use. She has been updating me on the progress of her bee hives and bass in the river - it's all go (and all sounds very delicious!) Pembrokeshire's hedgerows are awash with beautiful flowers and yesterday whilst driving on the most secret of back roads between Newgale and Broad Haven it was a pleasure to see hundreds and hundreds of butterflies - the air seemed to swarm with them and the sight signalled the onset of summer. The possible demise of native British butterflies is often discussed but it is a delight to see them thriving here. 'Tis the season of impromptu barbecues, picnics, fresh strawberries and Pimms, ice creams, sandcastles and splashing about (if you're brave enough). The water is still pretty chilly, take my word for it, but few things beat throwing yourself about in crashing waves at Newgale as the tide comes in over hot sand on a long summer's evening. The Great British summer being what it is though, I would encourage everyone to make the most of it and find time to make a splash!

June 27th sees the start of Pembrokeshire Fish Week, a brilliant week which celebrates Pembrokeshire's seafood and coastline. The week, now in its tenth year, is jam-packed with a huge variety of events. From fish suppers with sea-shanties in local pubs and restaurants to fishing trips which cater for all levels, cookery demonstrations and activities for all ages. It's a great opportunity to sample the best of local produce and to see more of Pembrokeshire's longstanding fishing heritage.

It really is a perfect time to visit us here in Pembrokeshire and if I were a member of the Harry Potter film cast or Russell Crowe or Cate Blanchett and had come to Pembrokeshire for the first time to film a blockbuster movie at Freshwater West, I wouldn't want to leave again!

May Day Celebrations

What a glorious Easter we enjoyed here! Now we're looking forward to May Day and the celebrations that will ensue.

A Spring festival is being held in Newport over the bank holiday weekend, with outdoor activities and live music to celebrate the season, whilst Colby Woodland Gardens are hosting a Bank Holiday Owl Prowl. There is such a lot going on all over the county; Pembrokeshire really is a place for all seasons.

Last week some of the ladies from Coastal Cottages and Activity Wales enjoyed a get-together at the newly opened Ocean Cafe Bar in Broad Haven, perfect for a natter with drinks whilst admiring the view over the beach towards the setting sun. We're always keen to try out a new watering hole! And we really are the people to speak to about where to go.

At the moment though, I am finding it hard to concentrate on anything other than my forthcoming wedding on 2nd May. I daresay the ladies here in the office will be glad to get rid of me for a few weeks and to have a break from my endless tales of florists, bridesmaids, dress alterations and caterers (using the best of Pembrokeshire produce incidentally, one can't beat Pembrokeshire new potatoes and topside of beef). Not long now!

It's all go at Easter!

Easter events and celebrations are in full swing here, with lots going on over the next few weeks.

Magnificent St. Davids Cathedral will be host to Music for Passiontide on 8th April and on Easter Monday are 'Three Choirs in the Cathedral' performing pieces by Handel and Dvorak. Tickets can be bought from various places in St. Davids. Another concert is 'Music for Easter' in St. Peter's Church in Goodwick this Saturday. If Easter egg hunts are more your sort of thing, there are plenty going on - including family Easter trails around Colby Woodland Gardens, Easter egg hunts and an Easter bonnet competition at beautiful Picton Castle and 'Hunt the Chick' around the Tudor Merchant's House in Tenby. If the weather continues to be as lovely as it is today, it's a perfect time of year to get out and explore different parts of the county - guided walks around Ramsey Island start from 9th April and boat trips over to Skomer Island are now running again. There is also a RHS springtime walk around the gardens of Picton Castle on 14th April - it's all go! And it's just as well that those ladies who accompanied me on my hen weekend have just about recovered, as it's going to be a busy few weeks!

The joys of spring!

It's a beautifully warm and sunny spring day here and we all enjoyed the lovely weekend - Gabrielle and Emma both sampled the delights of Tenby whilst Sarah T has been giving vent to her feelings on Saturday's 6 Nations rugby to anyone who will listen. I have had my first barbecue of the year (the first of many I hope!) and have been dusting off picnic hampers and Pimms jugs. I have also sworn off lamb after watching tiny newborn lambs frolicking in neighbouring fields. At least for the spring anyway.

There are a busy few weeks coming up, with Mothering Sunday approaching on 22nd March and Easter only a few weeks later. So Easter egg hunts will soon be in full swing. We're all full of ideas here so if you're in need of inspiration give us a ring. Inspiring ideas for Mothers Day and Easter that is, rather than Easter egg hunts (although we're full of ideas on those too). It's a perfect time to visit, especially if this gorgeous weather continues. Cecilia is launching a campaign to have some garden furniture installed outside our office, so we can all enjoy our lunch in the fresh air.

In other news, some of the ladies from the office are joining me on my hen weekend this weekend - watch out, there's sure to be plenty to shock and amuse on this blog next week! Inevitably from certain people who shall remain nameless (at least for now).

Spring has sprung!

Spring is in the air!

Here in the office we're all full of the joys of spring, and of course we all still have a lovely warm and satisfied glow after Wales beat England in the rugby last Saturday - let's hear it for Wales winning the grand slam! Hopes are high and i'm sure the boys won't let us down.

The frost and snow of a few weeks ago are long gone and have given way to sunshine and warm days - daffodils, snowdrops and crocuses and appearing in their hundreds (is the plural of crocus in fact croci? The question has puzzled me for some time so perhaps someone could answer it!)

Next Tuesday is of course Shrove Tuesday and we have been debating our favourite pancake fillings - Gabrielle and I are in agreement on sugar and lemon juice, whilst Sarah T is a raspberries and ice cream kind of a girl. So only six weeks until Easter, and it's not too late to book an Easter holiday with us. If the weather is as perfect as it was last year (and i'm hoping it will be) it's an ideal time to visit.

Pembrokeshire in the snow!

It's snowing in Pembrokeshire! This is indeed a rare sight as our milder coastal climate doesn't often allow it. There is a great deal of excitement here - Sarah T was taking photos of a snow-dusted Haverfordwest at 3am this morning, and Sarah W has already built a snowman (complete with coal buttons and a carrot nose!) I'm hoping that the snow will last until my day off, as i'm itching to get up to the Preseli Mountains with my sledge.

The scenery is absolutely beautiful, and few sights are more spectacular and surreal than Newgale in the snow!

Love is in the air...

Huge congratulations to Sarah W who has just become engaged!! We're all thrilled to hear such exciting news! It has certainly beaten the January blues.

Love is in the air here in our office - Sarah W is starting to make wedding plans and my own wedding in May is drawing ever nearer! Time is flying so i'm busy with final preparations (such as the guest list - at this rate Pembrokeshire will have to close down for a day). With so many beautiful venues and such stunning scenery, Pembrokeshire is the perfect romantic setting. It would also be the perfect place for our respective hen weekends - but to save any embarrassment among local friends and family, it is perhaps wiser to leave the county.

Love it or hate it but Valentine's Day will soon be upon us. Expectations are high amongst the ladies here, hoping to be overwhelmed with the usual accoutrements. The most perfect surprise would be to be whisked off for a romantic break away in a snug cottage by the sea (hint hint). So listen up chaps! If your lady love is deserving of a real treat, give us a ring and you are sure to be romantically inspired! Apologies if that sounds a bit nauseating - we are prone to getting carried away.

Finally, Tally has recently left us for nursing. Her cheerfulness and warmth will be much missed but we wish her well in all future escapades and we will all keep in touch!

2009 is here at last! We have all recovered from the festive season and celebrations (it took some of us longer than others) and now it's time for making new resolutions and turning over new leaves for the new year. It's also a time to make plans for the coming twelve months, booking holidays in particular! Here in the office we have been rushed off our feet with guests booking their Pembrokeshire holidays so do be sure to phone us as soon as you can.

Some good news (which makes a nice change) is that the long-range weather forecast for 2009 is very promising indeed and features such adjectives as "dry", "warm" and "sunny." Who needs the Riviera when one can visit sunny Pembrokeshire! So hopes are high for the spring and summer, although don't hold me to it - i'm making no promises.

In the meantime, a very Happy New Year to you all!

Merry Christmas!

At last! Christmas really is here and we're excitedly counting down the hours, whilst making last-minute preparations. Tally and I have both been rushing to finish our Christmas shopping today, Ann B has been loading up her car with gifts and treats and Gabrielle has been busy delivering presents. I'm feeling particularly festive after an atmospheric torch lit carol concert in the grounds of Picton Castle, warmed by plenty of mulled wine and mince pies. The mince pie countdown continues!

The coming week promises to be filled with much mirth and merriment, and one party after another - culminating in New Year's Eve. Here in the office we've been comparing notes on our party plans and ideas for fancy dress costumes. I'm sure that the exchanging of stories and tales of our escapades will take us right through January. New Year in Pembrokeshire is not to be missed! Sarah W will be living it up in Fishguard, Sarah T and Leanne will be getting their groove on in Haverfordwest, Natalie will be strutting her stuff in Tenby and I will be celebrating in style in Little Haven (i'm already busy sewing sequins onto my costume!)

Two weeks to go! We're counting down the days here in the office, whilst rocking around our Christmas tree.

Last weekend I had the enormous pleasure of welcoming an old university friend to Pembrokeshire (I say old, yet we are only 25). Each time the said lady visits from Cornwall, I relish the opportunity to reveal more of Pembrokeshire's hidden treasures to her. So this time it was high jinks in Haverfordwest, silliness at St. Brides, mischief at Marloes, laughter in Little Haven, partying in Port Lion and brilliance at Burton. Our days of rampaging around Cardiff University students' union may be long gone but as much amusement can be had on an evening out in Pembrokeshire! Especially when fuelled by mulled wine and mince pies (and the rest). We had more luck Christmas shopping in Narberth than we did in Cardiff (and this is a lady with impeccable taste) and much merriment tramping around the grounds of Scolton Manor. We'll now be eagerly planning our next weekend of whimsy in West Wales (before my wedding in May I hope).

But in the meantime, Christmas draws ever nearer and we do still have some late cottage availability and great special offers - perfect for a Christmas with a difference! The countdown continues! Four weeks to go. Here in the office we're bounding around like excited Christmas elves (well, some more than others) - busy making plans for the festive season. There is a lot going on over the next few weeks, from Christmas fayres all over the county to Pantos and a festival of Christmas trees in St. Davids. There are carol concerts and services, and a general air of Christmas spirit. I'm looking forward to the Christmas fayre at the Druidston Hotel on 7th December and to trying new recipes for mulled wine and mulled cider (including a lethal concoction from Somerset with a Pembrokeshire twist). Gabrielle is keen to get to Narberth for the gorgeous Christmas shopping and winter carnival, Sue will be at the Tenby carnival and Mel will be digging out her Christmasy earrings. Sarah W is busy making her Christmas shopping list, whilst Tally is promising to make us all mince pies. Everyone must remember to eat 12 mince pies (at least) in the run-up to Christmas to ensure a good 12 months in the coming year. Some of us are well on the way! A round of Christmas parties are coming up, including the Coastal Cottages of Pembrokeshire staff Christmas party in a few weeks; amusing escapades are bound to ensue (and circus performances?)

We still have availability for Christmas , so it's not too late to plan a spontaneous festive getaway! With so much on offer, who can resist the charms of Pembrokeshire? As beautiful now in crisp, clear winter light as it is in the height of summer.

The festive season is drawing ever nearer and it is just less than 6 weeks until Christmas Day itself! (40 days in fact). Cue carol singing, mince pies, mulled wine, all things delicious, decadent and indulgent, Christmas trees, decking the halls with boughs of holly and ........ last minute panic buying for Christmas presents?

Woofing and wagging

This weekend sees the annual Discover Dogs show at Earls Court in London. Now in its thirteenth year, the event is a brilliant barking bonanza organised by The Kennel Club in association with Royal Canin. The two-day show boasts 200 breeds of dogs, agility and training sessions, trade stands, plenty of other attractions and information on canine care. This year Mel, Rona and Linda will be representing Coastal Cottages of Pembrokeshire, armed with information on dog friendly holidays in Pembrokeshire. They will be able to answer any questions thrown at them on where to stay, which pubs, beaches and attractions to visit. So if you and your pooch are in the area, pop along to see them.

Pembrokeshire is an ideal place to visit with your dog. Half term Halloween horrors

Half term is just a few days away and there is plenty going on in Pembrokeshire, with the week ending in a spooky finale at Halloween.

There are plenty of parties and celebrations of All Hallows Eve going on around the county and we're all comparing notes in the office on our costumes for the night. Leanne will be sporting a pair of round spectacles, a wand, wizard hat and lightning scar as Harry Potter, Sarah W will be parading around Fishguard as Little Bo Peep whilst Sarah T will be terrorising Haverfordwest as a vampire. Tally meanwhile, will be gaining a few arachnid legs to scuttle from pub to pub as a spider. Emma will be spreading her magic dressed up as a witch and I will be hoping to win the prize for best costume at The Castle in Little Haven as one of four ghostbusters, with boiler suits and hoovers strapped to our backs.

Seal spotting

We've all been rushed off our feet here in Coastal Cottages with booking enquiries for 2009, now that the new brochure is out, so do book early if you're keen to return to a favourite cottage!

The nights are drawing in now, but Autumn is a beautiful time to visit Pembrokeshire. The leaves are beginning to turn - reds, oranges and gold - and the weather is crisp and dry (for the moment anyway.) A highlight of Pembrokeshire in October are the seal pups that are born at this time of year. They can be spotted in tiny secret coves around the coastline - I have spotted a few seals whilst I was walking around the coastal path from St. Brides and Tessa has been walking around the Deer Park at Martins Haven in hope of spotting some. Sarah W recommends Strumble Head as good seal-spotting sight too. Thousand Island Expeditions and Venture Jet are still running boat trips from St. Davids at this time of year, so another great way to see them is from the water - wrap up though!

It's a beautiful sunny day here in Pembrokeshire, the long-promised Indian summer has arrived at long last. We are all making the most of the weather - with Tessa drying out apples at home, Sarah W hatching plans to get some chickens, Tally enjoying walks on the beach and I am debating whether the sea is still warm enough to go out in my kayak - it is.

We may be busy here in the office with holiday enquiries for 2009, but 2008 is far from over! Yes the sun is shining and the forescast is even brighter! Next weekend is set to be a great one and why? Well i gave in to the elements and bought Body Boards for the whole family. From the moment i swiped my credit card, the sun rose out the sea, the clouds moved away and the sea has been like a lake ever since!!

So next April I will venture out to the same shop, because i am superstitious, buy the same board and rush to the beach to watch the clouds part once again!

Wet and wild West Wales

A glance out of the window would be enough to tell anyone that we are not having the hoped-for Indian summer. It has been raining yet again and there is a nip in the air, but we are not going into hibernation yet. The ladies here in the Coastal Cottages office have been casting votes on the best way to spend a rainy day in Pembrokeshire......

Ann's vote goes to an exploration of the magnificent St. David's Cathedral - with its fascinating history and architecture, gift shop and refectory. Tally would choose pottery painting in Narberth, whilst Nathalie is all for 10 pin bowling (at Canaston Bridge or Milford Marina). Sue would opt for the Crystal Maze at Canaston Bridge, Folly Farm, or Ocean Lab in Goodwick. Silent World and Ocean Commotion in Tenby also make a fun-filled, family friendly day out. Jan would recommend a bracing and invigorating walk on the beach, coastal path or around Llys Y Fran dam to "blow the cobwebs away." Sarah W's vote goes to a riding lesson undercover (indoors that is, not in disguise) or an afternoon in the swimming pool in Fishguard leisure centre.

I would choose an afternoon spent wandering around the treasure trove of art galleries that the county boasts, from Fishguard to Narberth, Tenby and everywhere in between. Tenby Museum and Art Gallery is well worth a visit, with fascinating exhibitions and a great collection of Gwen and Augustus John's paintings and etchings (they were born in Tenby). The beauty of the Pembrokeshire coast has long inspired and appealed to artists - and the work of these is well-worth investigating.

So the miserable weather shouldn't put anyone off! Pembrokeshire can be enjoyed even in the most wet and wild conditions.

Autumn is in the air

After an epic run of 20,000 miles around the world, Rosie Swale Pope made it home to Tenby last week almost 5 years after she set off. Rosie set off in October 2003 and crossed Europe, Asia and North America to raise awareness of Prostate cancer. The streets of Tenby thronged with people eager to welcome her home, as Rosie made the last few miles on crutches with a huge Welsh flag still firmly tied around her shoulders.

Elsewhere in Pembrokeshire, St. Davids hosted its Really Wild Food and Countryside Festival over the weekend; with cookery demonstrations, birds of prey, face painting, welly throwing competitions and food and delicacies produced all over Wales. From what Ann, Mel and George have been telling me, it sounds a brilliant event and is to be held next year on 5th and 6th September. Coming up this weekend is the Pembrokeshire County classic vehicle run, setting off from Milford Marina at 10am on Sunday and travelling north to Haverfordwest, St. Davids, Fishguard, Newport, Eglwyswrw then on to Narberth and Tenby. It's great fun to pick a spot and wave the drivers on as they pass by in their gleaming machines.

Autumn is certainly in the air now and as with the 1st September every year, we have opened up the bookings for 2010 for those of you who are particularly well organised. For those of you who are slightly less so, the coming weeks are the perfect time for a spontaneous getaway as we have a great selection of short breaks and late offers available. The summer may be drawing to a close (what summer, I hear you cry?!) but Pembrokeshire is still the perfect place to enjoy bracing walks on beautiful beaches, cosy suppers in atmospheric pubs or days spent exploring picturesque castles, a cathedral, museums, shops and galleries. Bank holiday high jinks

We are all exchanging stories of how we spent the bank holiday here in the office this morning - despite the weather not being perfect, there has been plenty going on.

Saturday saw Camrose Vintage Working Day and Linda and Ann B both went along. Tally has been sampling local public houses as she believes this knowledge is vital to her work here in Coastal Cottages -she's the girl to ask about where to go. Leanne meanwhile spent Sunday on a mystery tour of Pembrokeshire pubs with her fellow ladies' cricket team to celebrate after winning the Pembrokeshire league and the Skelfayre cup, yet she was in the office bright-eyed and bushy-tailed on Monday morning. Jan celebrated her birthday and yesterday I was to be found battling the elements in Little Haven raft race. Our team came an impressive 6th place out of 15. Our main achievement was the fact that the raft didn't come apart half way or capsize. It was a pretty heated race between locals and visitors alike and afterwards we were all to be found warming up in The Castle enjoying a barbecue and cups of tea/pints. We are now re-assessing our raft design and strategy ready for next year.

As August draws to a close, here in the office the ladies in publishing are busy putting the finishing touches to the 2009 Coastal Cottages of Pembrokeshire brochure - due to be published in late September. It's exciting stuff, with an array of new properties having joined for next year so be sure to order your copy early! Already the nights seem to be drawing in and the leaves are turning. Autumn will soon be upon us but hopes are high for an Indian summer - the perfect time to .... stay with friends.

We're all going on a.... summer holiday!

And so the summer holidays are upon us, with six glorious weeks stretching out ahead of us - the perfect time for those not lucky enough to live in Pembrokeshire to visit. The county has something special to offer everyone - whether it's a seaside bucket-and-spade break or a getaway to take in the spectacular flora and fauna of the area. There was a magnificent display of sand castles on offer on Newgale and Broad Haven's golden beaches last weekend - with everything from motte and bayley castles to Medieval-style fortresses fashioned by tiny hands in the sand. There are also the most delicious smells of barbecues every time one drives past - from freshly caught fish to exotic kebabs, toasted marshmallows to sizzling sausages - mouth-watering!

Meanwhile, back in the office....
Cecilia and Sarah W have been telling tales of each of their new kittens (sisters with shared characteristics!), while Jan has been updating us on her two gorgeous grand daughters. All sound pretty exhausting! Sarah T has been flashing the bruises she got from paintballing at nearby Heatherton and I have been grabbing every opportunity to get out in my kayak at Newgale. I was there at 8am on Sunday morning and we whiled away hours paddling (and racing) across the calm, beautifully clear water with shoals of fish. Fortunately there were no sharks, as recently spotted in Goodwick. It made an invigorating start to the day and was promptly followed by bacon butties in the Sands Cafe.
We have all been making the most of the gorgeous weather - fingers crossed that it will last for many more weeks (if not months) of sand castles, barbecues and summer holiday fever.

Singing in the rain???

Despite the unpredictable weather here in the wilds of West Wales, there has been plenty going on and a bit of drizzle won't dampen our spirits!

Linda has been regaling us with tales of the sponsored walk she took part in last week - trekking from Porthgain to the blue lagoon at Abereiddy and then back to Porthgain in aid of Tenovus cancer charity. The walkers were battered by the wind but must have enjoyed the sunshine along this magnificent stretch of coastline. Linda has been giving us gorgeous descriptions of the amazing colours of the sea that day, and how the waves crashed against the cliffs below. The twelve walkers, accompanied by Linda's tired out pooch, then got back to the pub in Porthgain for a well-deserved pint (sloshed in the Sloop more like). A substantial amount of money was raised for a great cause, and no doubt the walk was enjoyed by all. Not much beats an invigorating hike along the Pembrokeshire coast path followed by an evening ensconced in a lovely pub.

Saturday night saw the summer proms at Scolton Manor, which I thoroughly enjoyed - glass of Pimms in one hand and strawberries and cream in the other. The rain didn't stop people stoically turning up, armed with umbrellas, macs, wellies and tents. We would have all enjoyed singing in the rain, except for the fact that my car alarm went off. The skies then cleared and the clouds made way for a lovely evening. Despite the typically British summer weather, there is still plenty going on and we are all making the most of each glimmer of sunshine and patch of blue sky! Saturday 21st June sees the start of Pembrokeshire Fish Week - a jam-packed festival that celebrates our county's coastline and local fish and seafood. There will be plenty going on, from delicious delicacies in local pubs and restaurants to boat trips, activities and cookery demonstrations. There are also lots of exhibitions in local galleries and live music around the county, perfect for those of you who are not too keen on fishy treats.

This coming week is a particularly tempting week to visit Pembrokeshire, and all of us here in the office will be making the most of it - Sue has been trying some new fish recipes in preparation and Sarah, not hugely keen on fish in general , is nevertheless looking forward to some classic fish and chips.

Up up and away!

Yesterday I took to the skies over Pembrokeshire and enjoyed a 30 minute pleasure flight over my favourite parts of the county. Despite unpredictable downpours, the skies cleared just in time as the sun came in over the sea. The tiny plane flew from the aerodrome at Withybush over Scolton Manor, where we had a prime view of the classic car show. Then out to the coast and from Little Haven north over Broad Haven, Druidston, Nolton, the great sandy length of Newgale, then Solva with its tiny boats in the harbour looking like toys and on to St. Davids with a spectacular view of its magnificent cathedral. We passed over beautiful Whitesands just as sunshine burst over Ramsey Island. On to Abereiddy and the sparkling turquoise water of the blue lagoon, and then it was time for the tiny plane and its awed passengers to head back to base.

It was an amazing experience to see these beautiful parts of the county from a totally different perspective - despite knowing them like the back of my hand, it's so different to have a bird's eye view of the tiny towns and villages, the homes of friends and family, lush green woods and fields, secret sandy coves, clear water and tiny islands. Back here in the office, we have welcomed Jan back from her travels to Cumbria and the Lake District and Cecilia has set off on her holiday. We are all also waiting with bated breath for news on the arrival of Sophie's baby, due any day now!

Today finds the ladies here in the office exchanging stories of what they have been up to over the bank holiday - Jenna has been raving about a delicious pub meal in the Jolly Sailor in Burton, Clemmie spent Saturday afternoon cheering on Tiers Cross Tug O' War team in the Pembrokeshire Young farmers rally, Cecilia took advantage of the sunny weather pottering in her garden, and Judy has been kayaking around the Broad Haven stretch of coastline. Despite the unpredictable weather, there has been plenty going on!

This week sees the renowned St. David's music festival taking place, with an array of classical performances from the Cathedral choir and leading UK artists. Now in its 30th year, the festival is a rare treat for anyone who enjoys music and is not just for classical lovers - a perfect way to spend an evening after a meal or drinks in one of St. David's pubs or restaurants (Tally recommends wine spritzers in the garden of The Old Cross Hotel!). So our blog is now live......

We have decided to get the blog live so we can tell you a little more about what we do here at Coastal, without the formalities of email spam or special oragami style direct mail!!

The team will post pics, news and video here and hopefully you will get more of an idea of what we are about as a team and a company; but also get a good feeling about Pembrokeshire as a place to be.

We are currently in the middle of a baby fest!! Both George and Lisa are currently on Maternity leave, parading their new babies around the county with great pride! Sophie, is due to have a baby on the 1st June too, so Matthew will probably be spending a lot more time in work in the next couple of months!!

The team are currently busy putting together Fathers Day bookings and next years brochure too, as believe it or not, to get it out in September we actually close entries by the end of the month!

Anyway, please enjoy the blog, its new for us too and hope we can have some real fun with this.
